The Box of Rainbows initiative, created by Fenland-based organisation CCORRN, approached Wisbech Town Council for assistance in funding the project, which aims to provide a Rainbow Box of Activities including arts, crafts and sports resources for families in Wisbech.

The Town Council has awarded a grant of £4,500 to CCORRN, almost mirroring Clarion Futures' contribution of £5,000. Cambridgeshire Community Foundation has given £4200 and a host of other organisations have donated funds, support and resources to this worthy cause.

The funding from Wisbech Town Council comes just in time for National Children's Play Day, a celebration of children's right to play, which is usually held in parks and public spaces across the UK on the first Wednesday In August.

This year things are going to be a little different with social distancing measures likely to continue for quite some time.

Playday 2020 will be celebrated on Wednesday 5 August and the theme this year is "Everyday Freedoms Everyday Adventures". The Playday 2020 theme aims to highlight the importance of giving children and teenagers the freedom to play and have everyday adventures. Normally held at the Spinney Adventure Park in Waterlees, the 1000+ children and young people who normally attend will instead by encouraged to take part in online activities as well as the physical ones contained in the Box of Rainbows. Resources in the Rainbow Box include a celebration of old fashion fun games like skipping, hop scotch, den building, dressing up, playing with play dough, painting pebbles and junk modelling to name just a few.

The Leader of Wisbech Town Council, Councillor Miss Samantha Hoy said, "I am very pleased that Wisbech Town Council is able to support this initiative, which, I am sure, will bring smiles to the faces of children in Wisbech. It is disappointing that it has been necessary to cancel some of the council's community events and festivals, because of the Covid-19 pandemic; however, on a positive note, this has meant that the council has been able to fund other activities for children and families instead, such as Box of Rainbows".

To apply for your Rainbow Box, please contact technical@ccorrn.org.uk with your name, postcode and ages of your children.

Wisbech residents who have already requested a box via The Wisbech Adventure Playground Facebook page are already on the list and do not need to reapply.

In the event that there are more requests than boxes available, Boxes of rainbows will be allocated on a first come first served basis subject to the email containing the required information. Successful applicants will be emailed a voucher along with details about how and when to collect their box.
