Walk a Mile in Their Shoes

Walk a Mile in Their Shoes

Sat, 06 Apr 2019 10:30

Awareness raising campaign, walking to raise money to support those fleeing domestic violence. £10 sign up fee, sign up online www.ferryproject.org.uk or at The Ferry Project. All funds raised will go towards an emergency fund for those fleeing domestic violence. A pair of heels or a tie is available to borrow during the event.

Everyone involved in the walk will be asked to raise £100 in sponsorship. They will be able to do this via online channels such as Virgin Money Giving or using a sponsorship form. The overall target is to raise £10,000.

All money raised will go towards a Crisis Fund, which can be accessed by local people fleeing domestic violence. A local charity will hold the fund and agencies such as The Ferry Project or Wisbech Town Council can apply on behalf of the individual. This will be decided by the Trustees of the charity.

Each participant will be requested to pay a £10 registration fee online at www.ferryproject.org.uk, over the phone, by cash, cheque or via Virgin Money Giving on the event page.
Men will be able to borrow a pair of shoes and the women will be able to collect a tie on the day. Registration will need to be completed to secure a pair of shoes, limited pairs are available.

Last year in the UK, two million people were victims of domestic violence. Two women a week are killed as a result of domestic abuse. We want to change this. We want to make a clear statement across Wisbech that domestic violence is wrong. We want to provide those who have suffered domestic abuse with stability, security and financial help, to give them the courage to walk out of their situation.

For the "Walk a mile in their shoes" event, we are asking that men walk a mile wearing a pair of heeled women's shoes and women walk wearing a full trouser suit, tie and flat shoes. This is a light-hearted way of approaching a serious issue, generating conversations and raising money. The Ferry Project supports, on average, ten people a year who are homeless as a direct result of domestic violence.

Wisbech Words at The Castle Open Mic

Wisbech Words at The Castle Open Mic

Thu, 25 Apr 2019 19:00

Message from Steve Barclay MP

Following the arts roundtable meeting held in February, I am pleased that Wisbech Words are holding a new open-mic night taking place in Wisbech Castle. It is hosted by poet, Elisabeth Sennitt Clough, and the inaugural event will be on April 25th at 7pm. This is an opportunity for local people to take their art forms off the page to share in a friendly, welcoming and supportive environment.

If you would like an introduction, please send your bio in advance. Self-introductions are also fine. Two to three min slots are available for poets, story-tellers, novelists, rap artists, spoken word performers and performance poets. Sign up in advance at wisbechwords@gmail.com or on the evening. This is a great idea and I hope many people locally will go along.
