Family Fun Recycling Day

Sat, 05 Jan 2019 10:00

Recycling artist Fred White – who with the help of local schoolchildren created the life-size giant temnodontosaurus which hangs in the museum's main gallery – will be guiding visitors through the art of making something out of stuff that is thrown away.

This will be the first of a series of special family Saturday events being held throughout January and early February, when the museum will be closed to visitors on weekdays up to Tuesday February 12.

Curator Robert Bell said: "People showed us how much they cared about the museum in 2018 and we are busy planning a great programme for 2019 – but we want to do our collection proud and show everything off at its very best.

"We didn't want to shut down altogether while we're cleaning so we came up with Family Saturdays through January into February when we'll be open from 10am to 4pm, our usual opening hours.

New Secondary School for Wisbech drop in consultation event

Wed, 09 Jan 2019 15:00

Have your say on designs for a new Secondary School for Wisbech at a drop in consultation event in January. Cambridgeshire County Council, with Design and Build Partner Kier Construction, will be holding events to seek views on the proposed Fenland Education Campus from 3-7pm on Wednesday 9 January.

The two simultaneous events will be held at Wisbech St Mary's Community Centre, Beechings Close, Wisbech St Mary, Wisbech, PE13 4SS and at the Queen Mary Centre, Queen's Road, Wisbech, PE13 2PE.

The proposed 600-place Secondary School, built on Cambridgeshire County Council owned land, will serve the current population and villages west of Wisbech and respond to rising pupil numbers from new residential developments in the town. The Campus will also include purpose-built accommodation for 60 pupils with Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This will enable the TBAP Unity Academy to relocate from their current leased site in Wisbech. Land on site will be retained by the Council for future expansion of the Secondary School and for a Primary School to provide the additional school places that would be required when the planned development of West Wisbech occurs. Subject to planning permission, construction begins in autumn 2019 with TBAP Unity Academy moving into their new accommodation in late autumn 2020 and the Secondary School ready for occupation by September 2021.

Plans can be viewed on a new project website which will be regularly updated

Wisbech Society- Early urban views of Wisbech

Mon, 14 Jan 2019 19:15

In the first Wisbech Society lecture of 2019, vice chairman and local historian Roger Powell will discuss the significance of three prints of the town, first published in 1756. Their importance lies in the fact that they were the earliest topographical views of an English town, but the identity of the artist, original publisher and reason for the choice of subject all remain a mystery. Powell will explore their possible origins and compare them with later images of the town during his illustrated presentation, Early Urban Views of Wisbech. Comparing early views with what we know today of familiar buildings and locations, he promises a fascinating evening that will transport us back to the reign of George II and a Wisbech in which Jonathan Peckover was soon to arrive.

The doors open at the Dwight Centre, Wisbech Grammar School at 7.15pm on Monday, 14 January, for a 7.30pm start.

Admission is free for Society members. For non-members there is an admission cost of £3.00, while under-18s are invited to come along for free.

Nestlé Academy Apprenticeships Open Evening

Nestlé Academy Apprenticeships Open Evening

Thu, 31 Jan 2019 18:00

The open evening is a great opportunity to understand what Apprentice opportunities Nestlé have at their Wisbech site. The evening will consist of talks from some of their current Apprentices and employees to disclose what it's really like to work there. An opportunity for their current Apprentices to showcase their roles and to offer advice on the application process!

Nestlé are offering specific rooms laid out for each apprenticeship scheme available and there will be a room for people to have some guidance on the application process.

The evening is being run by the current Nestlé Apprentices so in each room there will be an Apprentice who is on that specific scheme.

There will be lots of information on each scheme, handouts to take away and an opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with Apprentices and experienced employees such as Engineers.

They'll also have a representative from Lincoln University, Holbeach Campus – where they send their Manufacturing Apprentices, to help on that side as well.

To attend:

Please arrive on site via the car park entrance directly off Cromwell Road, signposted
"Welcome to Nestlé Purina Wisbech".

Head towards the revolving doors of Reception where you will be greeted by the receptionist who will book you onto the site.
