Free event for Fenland landlords

Free event for Fenland landlords

Thu, 29 Nov 2018

Fenland landlords will have the chance to gain valuable advice and support at a free event in Wisbech. Building on the success of its first landlord event in June, Fenland District Council has organised another landlord networking session at The Boathouse Business Centre on Thursday, November 29. The event aims to update landlords on new government legislation affecting the private rental sector and demonstrate the services on offer from the council and its partners. The National Landlords Association will be on hand with everything landlords need to know about changes to houses of multiple occupation (HMO) licensing, court processes including Section 21 notices and landlord taxation. The Department of Work and Pensions will also provide an update on the rollout of Universal Credit specifically for landlords, and the council's private sector housing team will be explaining the benefits of its landlord advice service. Attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss fire safety regulations with Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and meet representatives from the council's housing options, environmental health, waste and recycling and homelessness prevention Trailblazer teams. Councillor Dee Laws, the council's Cabinet member responsible for private sector housing, said: "Whether you're just starting out as a landlord, have a small number of buy to lets or a considerable property portfolio, you'll be sure to benefit from attending this free event. "Landlords can find out about the services the council offers to support them in their role as a housing provider, and get advice to overcome any practical problems they may encounter, such as damp issues. It also aims to make landlords more aware of their legal obligations to help them protect their business and avoid potential fines or criminal proceedings." Inna Melnyk, National Landlords Association Representative – East, said: "The NLA is keen to work with Fenland District Council to help improve housing standards across the district. Landlord networking events are an ideal way for the NLA to provide face to face support to the sector." The event is being held at The Boathouse Business Centre in Wisbech between 6.30pm and 9.30pm.

Inspiring Creativity - improving mental health in Fenland

Fri, 30 Nov 2018 10:00

A FREE workshop for creative artists in Fenland, interested in becoming creative tutors.

10am - 2.30pm
We invite artists of all kinds: painters, photographers, actors, performers, film-makers, music producers etc. to join us for a fun morning. We will introduce you to our approach of creative learning and you can show us your creative passion.

If you are passionate and confident about your art-form, have strong communication skills and care about improving people's lives through art - you could be ideal for our team! We run creative courses for adults at risk of social isolation, primarily due to experience of mental ill-health. Ideally you will have experience of working with under-served groups and teaching, however, for the right people we can help develop these skills.

Wisbech Society Christmas Quiz

Mon, 03 Dec 2018 19:15

In the third event of its 2018/19 winter lecture series, Wisbech Society is delighted to cordially invite its members and guests to a Christmas Quiz, to be held at the Dwight Centre, Wisbech Grammar School (entrance off North Brink), commencing at 7.30pm on Monday, 3 December.

Come and learn some obscure facts about our wonderful town, in a quiz devised to surprise and entertain. Make up a team with your neighbours on the night, then take advantage of wine and mince pies to aid cogitation or soften the disappointment of not winning the prize, for which every expense has been spared – and then some!

The doors open at the Dwight Centre, Wisbech Grammar School at 7.15pm on Monday, 3 December, for a 7.30pm start.

Admission is free for Society members. For non-members there is an admission cost of £3.00, while under-18s are invited to come along for free.

The Journey

Thu, 06 Dec 2018 19:30

The cast of The Journey, which tells the story of a mother and child fleeing their devastated war-ravaged homeland for a destination of perceived safety, features actors who are themselves refugees and face an uncertain future in Britain.

There will also be a post show discussion involving refugees from overseas currently living in the UK.

To research the play writer and director Steve Lambert visited Lebanon and camps on the Syrian border to learn of the desperate measures people can be forced to endure as they strive to survive.

In the UK he worked with refugee communities and support organisations as well as Edinburgh based poet Ghazi Hussain, a former Palestinian refugee who fled Syria to escape torture and imprisonment – and was twice repatriated before being given leave to stay in Britain.

The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 or £8 for concessions.

How would you like to personally deliver your Christmas letter to Father Christmas?

After long negotiations with the elves, Father Christmas has agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to come and visit us at the Leverington Christmas Indoor Market.

So, what are you doing on Saturday 8th December between 10am – 1pm? Get yourselves to St Leonards church and look for the famous red suit!

Youngsters - and indeed adults - can bring a letter along and have a chat with Father Christmas. He'll take your letter back to the North Pole and read them all over a hot chocolate & mince pie and check the naughty book!

(Please note; there's no charge for seeing him and no presents given).

There's lots for you to do & and look at, how about spending time with a fantastic bunch of crafters who have lots to of wonderful gifts for those last minute presents?! We are bursting at the seams with their beautiful hand crafted products for every taste & age we guarantee you'll be spoilt for choice.

Then, of course, there's the wonderful church with it's famous stained glass windows and the bookshelves with pre-loved books at just 50p each.

But that's not all, our cheery volunteers will be on hand serving delicious cakes and hot drinks, not forgetting squash for the little ones.

This will be our last market until March 2019. So please come along and support us.

We'd like to thank everyone who has attended, had a stall or volunteered during the year & wish you all a peaceful Christmas.

Booster Cushion Theatre - A Christmas Carol

Tue, 11 Dec 2018 16:00

With the help of a large 60cm tall pop up book and lots of humbugs, this very entertaining version of the Dicken's classic tale takes the audience back to Victorian England using mime, voice and a couple of suitcases loaded full of ghosts!

An old Dickensian narrator arrives to tell us the news, fresh from London town about the story he has heard of Scrooge. He opens his Big Book but as he does he starts transforming into the different characters! The audience watches as he turns into a grumpy Scrooge, a very goofy Marley and the Three Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Future. But the narrator spots that in the audience Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Belle and Fezziwig seem to be hiding and children get to participate as the characters. A great introduction to Dickens.

Wisbech Town Council Meeting

Mon, 17 Dec 2018 19:30

Full Town Council Meeting

Wisbech Town Council has a tradition in it's final meeting of the year.

During that meeting a list of all the notable people around the world who have died is read out. Then, a list of local people who have passed away is read out (if their friends and family have asked the Town Council to do so.)

These names are committed to the Town's permanent record and then the Council stands for a minute's silence to remember those named.

If you have a friend or relation who has passed away during 2018 who lived in Wisbech and would like their name included in the list and remembered in the minute's silence please contact the Town Clerk with details at: info@wisbechtowncouncil.org.uk

Please do consult other family and loved ones first, to be sure that they support the inclusion.

All Town Council and Committee meetings are public meetings, and everybody is welcome to attend the meeting on 17 December to remember those who have passed away.
