After Hours Live - Paul Bell

After Hours Live - Paul Bell

Fri, 02 Nov 2018 19:00

After Hours Live is a monthly live music event that takes place on the first Friday of every month in Wisbech, the heart of the Fens. It combines first-class entertainment with a twist of faith. Performers come from far and wide across the UK, as well as some great home-grown local talent.

The doors of Octavia's café open at 7pm open and the kettle is put on the boil, brewing up steaming cups of tea and luscious cappuccinos and lattes. Free entry means that you can come and enjoy the comfortable cafe atmosphere and still be able to afford a cup of your favorite beverage and maybe even treat yourself to an indulgent slice of cake! Some performers may also bring CDs they have recorded or books they have written that will also be available on the night.

Profits made in the café go to our local homeless charity, The Ferry Project.

Wisbech Society - Horatio Nelson

Mon, 05 Nov 2018 19:00

The second in this winter's series of Wisbech Society Lectures is entitled 'Horatio Nelson '

John Wright, a retired RAF officer, will give us a biography of our most famous admiral with particular reference to his service career and the Napoleonic Wars. He will discuss some of the Nelsonian myths as well as touch upon his relationship with Emma Hamilton.

This promises to be an intriguing evening given the turbulent times in which nelson lived and served - losing an eye in Corsica and an arm in Tenerife before the fatal wound at the battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805. On hearing of his death George III is alleged to have said " We have lost more than we have gained "

The doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start. Free to members (£3 for non-members )

Trad Jazz at the Angles

Trad Jazz at the Angles

Fri, 09 Nov 2018 19:30

"Trad Jazz" return 2018, celebrating the happy and exciting sounds of old school Jazz. Echoes of Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Chris Barber and the halcyon days of Trad Jazz mix with fun and upbeat tempos alongside cool Blues. Featuring Pete Allen on clarinet and saxophone, he has topped the bill in those magical American homes of jazz, St. Louis, Sacramento and, of course, New Orleans, where he was awarded an Honorary Citizenship for his services to jazz music. In the mid-eighties he was chosen to lead the Worldwide All Stars at the Jazz Jubilee in Sacramento, USA.

Local man Sean Moyses will be providing banjo, guitar and ukulele. No stranger to The Angles, Sean's music has taken him around the world and after fifteen years of living and playing music in Germany returned to live in the area a few years ago. His credentials reads like a who's who in the entertainment world.

As a special guest for the evening local singer/song-writer Jacqui Huggins will be taking the stage to present some Classic American song-book hits. A Wisbech lady, she has sung for six decades on the local scene.

It's sure to be a fun night for not only Jazz lovers but people who simply want some good, entertaining, happy music.

Wisbech Rotary Club Silver Monday Film - A Star is Born

Wisbech Rotary Club Silver Monday Film - A Star is Born

Mon, 19 Nov 2018 09:30

On the third Monday of every month, Wisbech Rotary, in partnership with the Light Cinema and Tesco, holds a film show for the over-60s, preceded by tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits.

We're delighted to say that we will be showing 'A Star is Born', starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. We've probably enjoyed the 1954 Judy Garland/James Mason version and some of us may seen the less critically acclaimed Barbara Streisand/Kris Kristofferson 1976 remake. The latest film has received excellent reviews and Lady Gaga's acting is said to be a revelation.

Doors open at 9.30 am and the film starts at 10.30.

And advanced notice that the film on 17 December is 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Tickets are already selling for this so get yours soon and come along and rediscover your inner Freddie Mercury.

Fenland landlords will have the chance to gain valuable advice and support at a free event in Wisbech. Building on the success of its first landlord event in June, Fenland District Council has organised another landlord networking session at The Boathouse Business Centre on Thursday, November 29. The event aims to update landlords on new government legislation affecting the private rental sector and demonstrate the services on offer from the council and its partners. The National Landlords Association will be on hand with everything landlords need to know about changes to houses of multiple occupation (HMO) licensing, court processes including Section 21 notices and landlord taxation. The Department of Work and Pensions will also provide an update on the rollout of Universal Credit specifically for landlords, and the council's private sector housing team will be explaining the benefits of its landlord advice service. Attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss fire safety regulations with Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and meet representatives from the council's housing options, environmental health, waste and recycling and homelessness prevention Trailblazer teams. Councillor Dee Laws, the council's Cabinet member responsible for private sector housing, said: "Whether you're just starting out as a landlord, have a small number of buy to lets or a considerable property portfolio, you'll be sure to benefit from attending this free event. "Landlords can find out about the services the council offers to support them in their role as a housing provider, and get advice to overcome any practical problems they may encounter, such as damp issues. It also aims to make landlords more aware of their legal obligations to help them protect their business and avoid potential fines or criminal proceedings." Inna Melnyk, National Landlords Association Representative – East, said: "The NLA is keen to work with Fenland District Council to help improve housing standards across the district. Landlord networking events are an ideal way for the NLA to provide face to face support to the sector." The event is being held at The Boathouse Business Centre in Wisbech between 6.30pm and 9.30pm.

Fri, 30 Nov 2018 10:00

A FREE workshop for creative artists in Fenland, interested in becoming creative tutors.

10am - 2.30pm
We invite artists of all kinds: painters, photographers, actors, performers, film-makers, music producers etc. to join us for a fun morning. We will introduce you to our approach of creative learning and you can show us your creative passion.

If you are passionate and confident about your art-form, have strong communication skills and care about improving people's lives through art - you could be ideal for our team! We run creative courses for adults at risk of social isolation, primarily due to experience of mental ill-health. Ideally you will have experience of working with under-served groups and teaching, however, for the right people we can help develop these skills.
