Fenland Archaeological Society Presents - Opium Eating in the 19th Century Fens A Talk by Dr Eric Somerville

Wed, 28 Feb 2018 19:30

Dr Somerville is a retired medical practitioner who worked in Wisbech and Peterborough for 40 years. His interest in opium was prompted by the fact that half the opium imported into Britain in the mid 19th Century was consumed within a 50 mile radius of Wisbech and Wisbech was the retail hub! His talk gives background information about opium usage in Victorian Britain before discussing reasons behind the high local consumption and the social consequences thereof. Booking essential so text 07742 321 774 or email info@fenarch.org.uk and book your place. You can pm me if that's easier for you.

Wisbech Society - Ely Cathedral: its history and symbolism

Mon, 12 Mar 2018 19:30

Postponed from 5 February - Jan Munt, former religious education teacher at Neale Wade Community College in March, and Ely Cathedral Education Officer, will give us an interactive talk using a beautifully crafted model of Ely Cathedral.

The Wisbech Society Lecture Programme for the 2017/18 season closes with a presentation entitled "Ely Cathedral – its history and symbolism" given by Jan Munt

Known as "the ship of the Fens" and visible for miles around, Ely Cathedral dates back to 11th C though its origins can be traced back to Ely Abbey in 7th C.

Jan uses a beautifully fashioned model in her interactive presentation and will "construct" the cathedral as she details its history and more enigmatically, its symbolism.

A graduate in theology, she taught Religious Education at Neale Wade Community College in March for several years and in 2000 was appointed

Ely Cathedral Education Officer. She retired from that post in 2015.

Her presentation will include anecdotes from her time working in the cathedral and it promises to be an informative evening.

The doors open at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start on 12th March Entry is free for members (£3 donation for non-members)

baby-friendly screening of Peter Rabbit @ The Light

Fri, 23 Mar 2018

Parents are welcome at The Light with our baby-friendly screenings for them and their babies, aged under one year old.

While these screenings are aimed at parents, giving them a couple of hours to relax and watch a movie with friends or loved ones, they are designed to be kinder to babies as well. The sound will be lowered and the lights will only be dimmed. This makes baby's first cinema experience a nice one but doesn't detract from the movie for the parents.

We are breast-feeding friendly and have baby changing facilities. And best of all, you will be with other people in a similar situation, so you don't need to worry if baby has a little fuss or you need to step out for a moment.

These screenings are only for parents or carers with babies; members of the general public will not be admitted.

Wisbech General Cemetery project "Hard Hat" visit

Wisbech General Cemetery project "Hard Hat" visit

Sat, 24 Mar 2018 14:00

Wisbech General Cemetery project.

Come to the Wisbech General Cemetery in North End Wisbech (next to ASDA) to see the building work as it progresses on the old Chapel. The Grade 2 listed Chapel which was built in 1848 has stood derelict and decaying for almost 50 years but now Wisbech Society, helped by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, has arranged for its re-roofing, installation of new doors and windows and with the provision of power and water connections, to create a meeting room and exhibition space housing the records of the 6500 or more souls buried in the cemetery over the past 180 years.

You will see how work is proceeding on the new roof and ancillary works and hear about the next stages of building works as well as the plans for the future use by the community on this long term project. The Society, the Architect and the Builders look forward to seeing you there.

Also do take the opportunity to walk round the cemetery and see the spring flowers emerging in this calm and atmospheric area. Members of the Society's project team and Friends of Wisbech General Cemetery will be on hand to explain the project and to show details of the works now about to commence. It will be possible to look round the cemetery and take in the atmospheric surroundings.
We look forward to seeing you.

There is no charge for the visit but donations towards the project are very welcome

Talkin' 'bout my generation - Project co-ordinator Hilary Cox Condron and Pop Culture Archivist Jess Johnston from Talkin Bout My Generation at the Horsefair

Thu, 29 Mar 2018 10:00

On Thursday 29th March Mods, Rockers, Hippies and Punks are invited to the Horsefair to celebrate musical memories of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The event at the Centre, running from 10am to 3pm, will be playing classic singles and providing clothes and accessories from the eras to dress up in, whilst sharing memories and stories of the music scene from Wisbech in years gone by.

Talkin Bout My Generation is a Heritage Lottery Fund project ran by Hilary Cox Condron and pop culture archivist, Jess Johnston. Hilary and Jess will be at the Horsefair Shopping Centre, at the side of Boots, gathering memories and stories of the music scene in Wisbech.

Project co-ordinator, Hilary, said: "Talkin Bout My Generation wants YOUR stories! Come along to the Horsefair on the 29th, and be prepared to have your memories tickled, spin a few singles in our retro music booths, dress up in the clothes and accessories of the era, share photos and stories and even go back to the day with some classic scents and tastes. Old Spice and Spacedust, anyone?! From buying your first record at Clarke's to gigs at the Corn Exchange and playing in local bands – we would love to hear your stories and see your photos."

The rediscovered musical heritage will be publicly shared on the CCAN (Cambridgeshire Community Archive Network) website www.mygeneration.ccan.co.uk and an exhibition, film and publication will share the project's findings.

This Heritage Lottery Fund project was inspired by, and is the result of, the partnerships developed through MarketPlace, which is a Creative People and Places arts engagement programme for Fenland and Forest Heath, for which Babylon ARTS is the lead Consortium partner.

Spitting Feathers a new kind of trash after a sonic ride of gigs with bands such as The Rezillos Department S The Members Swamp Delta and lots of festivals played and to be played We look forward to visiting Wisbech for the first time.
Its a punk Rockin disco trashy Glunk rockin groovy rampage of songs that should of been left in the crypt of ifyness when last played on radio Luxembourg 40 years ago. People love it laugh with it and dance to it .

Songs like Daddy Cool , Crazy Horses . Coo ca tue ,Disco classics Country classics we destroy them all . Aint no other band that does a street punk version of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep or a ska take on You aint seen nothing yet.
