Gypsy Roma and Traveller History Month 1-30 June

Gypsy Roma and Traveller History Month 1-30 June

Fri, 01 Jun 2018

1-30 June every year: Raising awareness of these communities in the UK.

Gypsies, Roma and Travellers are the largest ethnic minority community in the European Union with over 12 million people across the EU and some 300,000 in the UK. They are very marginalised and suffer extreme levels of prejudice and discrimination. Fenland has the largest population of Gypsy travellers of any district in England.

Gypsy Roma and Traveller History Month was established in Britain in 2008 as a way of raising awareness of these communities and their contributions to society, and to offset negative stereotyping and prejudices.

Great Ormond Street Charity Ball

Sat, 02 Jun 2018 19:30

Some of you know my son Travis had to have an operation two years ago. Travis was diagnosed with coarctation (narrowing) of the Aorta the body's largest artery. Without treatment there can be many complications with the most leading to heart failure. So they fitted a Stent to widen the Aorta and this was then further stretched during a procedure in 2017. So my family and I would like to raise some money to help the wonderful staff at Great Ormond Street to help others.

Gypsy Traveller 'Celebration Day'

Wed, 06 Jun 2018 10:30

'Pathways To Inspiration' is an initiative supported by St. Peter and St. Paul's church to offer quality art projects to local school children. This is carried out in St. Peters Lodge, Love Lane, Wisbech, where professional artists are employed to teach 24 children, during two sessions each day for one week, the art form chosen for the project. Over the Past 18 months numerous artists, mostly local ones, and approximately 180 children have benefited from this initiative.

This year The Pathways To Inspiration team were invited to work with other groups to show the positive effect that Gypsy Travellers have on the local community. The Rosmini Centre gained funding from The Heritage Lottery to carry this out. Elm Road School realise the value of the work carried out in St. Peters Lodge and were very happy for 24 of their pupils to attend two residency weeks, one in March the other in April. The remit that was chosen for Pathways to Inspiration was to make a story mat with pockets on, to hold story cards which would depict the Heritage of the Gypsy Traveller Community, this mat will be taken around local schools and used as a reading tool.

The first group were led by artist Marion Savill who taught them a great many facts about the history and way of life of travelling people, they then produced 12 story cards and artefacts to go in the pockets of the mat. The second group were led by Lorena Hodgson who provided lots of colourful fabrics for the children to create a quilted backing for the pockets, they then sewed buttons, lace, ribbon and materials onto the pockets.

Photographer Dan Donovan is at the moment creating a book of the children's work, a copy of which will be offered to children when the mat goes to their school.

The entire Project will be exhibited at St. Peters Lodge on Wednesday 6th June from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm please come along and see for yourself the work of the children as well as the work of the other groups involved.
