Wisbech Society - England and the German Hanse 1370-1474 with reference to the Wash ports - Pirates of the Wash

Wisbech Society - England and the German Hanse 1370-1474 with reference to the Wash ports - Pirates of the Wash

Mon, 08 Jan 2018 19:30

Dr Paul Richards, a specialist in maritime history and the Hanseatic League, returns to tell of the sea wars and piracy affecting the ports of King's Lynn and Boston in Mediaeval times.

Not to be missed me hearties as Dr Paul Richards will address the Wisbech Society on the subject of Sea Wars and Piracy in the Wash.

You've doubtless heard of "Pirates of the Caribbean" … but "Pirates of the Wash"?! It may not have that Disney/ Depp ring to it but these pirates were for real and operated very much closer to home. From the C14th - C16th, piracy was rife in the Wash with consequences for the Wash ports and this forms the basis of Dr Richard's presentation.

A specialist in maritime history and the Hanseatic League, he taught history at the College of West Anglia and for the Open University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a former mayor of King's Lynn and Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk.

Did you know King's Lynn had its own notorious buccaneer in the shape of Jack Brandon? The evening promises to shiver your timbers and swash your buckle.

The doors open at 7.15pm at the Dwight Centre, Wisbech Grammar School (entry from North Brink) on January 8th 2018 and the presentation is free to members of the Wisbech Society but non-members are most welcome(nominal charge £3)

Having worked with big brands such as Disney, Microsoft, Tate and the V&A, James will give us the run-down on past and present projects in their portfolio.

Following the first R&D project in Wisbech, The Brink of the Future, Collusion is planning our next project that'll explore technologies such as Minecraft, and we want you to be part of it.

This Meetup will be informal and we will share info about Collusion and the in_collusion project. This is an open invite so please feel free to bring along people who you believe would be interested in hearing more.

Hope to see you there!
