๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿƒ Half Term Autumn Trail at Peckover House

Sun, 29 Oct 2017 11:00

Brimblebottom the brown rat will be just one of the autumn creatures which children visiting the National Trust's Peckover House this half term will be searching for.

The Autumn Trail in the garden of Peckover House has become a popular event for children and each year the trail has a new theme.

"We like to make the trail fun for children, as well as bringing in elements of the natural world and a touch of autumn magic," said the trail's organiser, Diane Smith,

"Characters such as Michaelmas the Heavy Metal Mouse and Snoddlesworth the snail will be searched for in the garden and there will be an autumn biscuit as a prize at the end of the trail."

The Autumn Trail will be available in the garden of Peckover House from Saturday 21 to Sunday 29 October, from 11am to 3.30pm throughout the week. Find clues around the garden, and then come along to the Reed Barn to collect your Autumn biscuit.

Admission costs £1 per child plus normal admission for non National Trust members.

'Crowded Room Wisbech'

Celebrating Our Community

The 'Crowded Room' project is a truly collaborative process which uses contemporary art practice to celebrate the importance of the individual and their place in the community. Tim Mann, the artist, uses different aspects of the human form to record an individual's presence within a large-scale portrait. The resulting work of art demonstrates that whilst each participant is different, in terms of appearance and character, as humans we are all integral to the world and are fundamentally all the same.

Tim also creates additional works of art during a 'Crowded Room', using participant's hands, markers or counters to complement the main portrait.

Tim's ambition is to take the 'Crowded Room' project into different areas of Wisbech to celebrate each individual and their place within a community. He recognises that, whilst everyone has somewhere that they call home, sometimes circumstances dictate that they have to move and become part of an alternative community, whether on a temporary or permanent basis.

Have your say on Wisbech transport schemes

Mon, 06 Nov 2017 10:30

Have your say on Wisbech transport schemes

Residents are being asked to have their say on future improvements to the Wisbech transport network to help unlock £10.5 million of government funding.

A consultation has been launched on the Wisbech Access Strategy, a package of individual transport schemes aiming to address existing transport issues, increase local road capacity and reduce accidents while supporting future housing and job growth.

Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council are seeking the public's view on the individual improvement schemes, and the short, medium and long-term packages of schemes proposed.

The schemes were developed using £1 million of feasibility study funding from the government, awarded via the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to support the growth and regeneration of Wisbech.

The LEP has also agreed a further allocation of £10.5 million from its Local Growth Fund to deliver a package of five transport schemes by 2021.

Schemes that have been shown to be needed first, to drive development and address local transport issues, include a scheme to replace the staggered junction at Broad End Road with a roundabout and another to improve the A47/Elm High Road roundabout.

Other projects include creating a Southern Access Road linking New Bridge Lane and Boleness Road, improvements to the Weasenham Lane/Ramnoth Road junction and signal improvements to the New Bridge Lane/Cromwell Road junction.

Additional projects, to be delivered by 2026, include creating the southern section of a new Western Link Road, relocating the A47/Elm High Road roundabout further east and improving Freedom Bridge roundabout and the bus station, while a long-term project is to create the northern section of the new Western Link Road by 2031.

The consultation runs until Monday, November 27, and includes three consultation events where members of the public can find out more about the Wisbech Access Strategy and fill-in a survey. The events will be held on:

• Monday, November 6, Walsoken Village Hall, 10.30am to 1pm and 3pm to 7pm.
• Friday, November 17, Wisbech Market Place, 9am to 12noon.
• Friday, November 17, Tesco Extra Cromwell Road, 3pm to 7pm.

Venue:

More information and an online version of the survey are also available at: www.fenland.gov.uk/wisbechaccess. Alternatively, email neighbourhoodstrategy@fenland.gov.uk for more details. Paper copies of the survey are also available to view and complete at Fenland District Councilโ€™s Wisbech @ your service shop, Tesco Extra, the Oasis Centre and Awdry House in Wisbech, Leverington Sports Club, Walsoken Church and Emneth Village Hall. Following the consultation, information gathered will be presented in a report to Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and Wisbech Town Council in December 2017 and January 2018 and recommendations for the Wisbech Access Strategy put forward. A final recommendation will then be taken to the LEP Board for approval of the ยฃ10.5m Local Growth funding to deliver the schemes.

Armistice Service at Wisbech General Cemetery

Armistice Service at Wisbech General Cemetery

Fri, 10 Nov 2017 11:00

Join Friends group to remember fallen heroes

Residents are being invited to join the Friends of Wisbech General Cemetery next month to honour those killed in battle.

The community group is holding a special Armistice Day commemoration at the cemetery on Friday, November 10, at 11am to remember fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives during the First World War.

Friends chairman Sue Beel said: "There are ten servicemen who gave their lives during the war buried in Wisbech General Cemetery, and for only two of them were their families able to provide a memorial stone. All the others are in unmarked graves.

"We want to take this opportunity of Armistice Day to lay a poppy on each of the graves and to remember them all for everything they did for our freedom."

"The War Graves Commission has pledged to mark each of the graves with a headstone and we hope this will happen in the near future."

Earlier this month, at Fenland District Council's annual volunteer Celebration Evening, the Friends of Wisbech General Cemetery won the Best Youth project award for an Armistice Day ceremony it held last year with the town's St Peter's Junior School.

Classic TV comedy 'Steptoe and Son' to be brought to life at Angles Theatre stage in Wisbech

Hambledon Productions will bring classic TV comedy 'Steptoe and Son' to life at the Angles Theatre

The cast includes John Hewer (Tony Hancock in Hancock's Half Hour: The Lost Episodes and Tommy Cooper in Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show) and Jeremy Smith (alumni from the National Youth Theatre and The Young Vic Company).

Albert and Harold are father and son. One proclaims he's "a poor old man" while the other protests that actually he's "a dirty old man!"

lassic TV comedy 'Steptoe and Son' to be brought to life at Angles Theatre stage in Wisbech

In actual fact, both are telling the truth. These two warring rag-and-bone-men, in their Shepherd's Bush scrapyard home, became household favourites for entire generations throughout the 60s and 70s and they still continue to entertain audiences today.

The show is suitable for those over the age of 14.

Venue:
Wisbech Market Place

Cat Welfare Wisbech rehoming day

Cat Welfare Wisbech rehoming day

Sat, 18 Nov 2017 13:00

We will be hosting a rehoming day at Cherries Cattery on the 18th of November betweem 1pm and 4pm in partnership with Cat Welfare Wisbech.

There will be cats to view in all the pens. All these cats are in need and deserve a new loving home. The charity will be holding a stall to raise money to help these cats find there forever home.

It would be lovely if everyone could come along and support this fantastic charity because if it wasn't for them i dread to think where these cats would end up.

Pictured are our two very own playful little kittens that we have adopted from Cat Welfare Wisbech

FenArch illustrated talk by Andy Ketley on Wisbech Tunnels

FenArch illustrated talk by Andy Ketley on Wisbech Tunnels

Wed, 22 Nov 2017 19:30

Illustrated talk by Andy Ketley on 22nd November at 7.30pm at Mendis on the research on the Wisbech Tunnels as part of the High Street Project.

The Fenland Archaeology Society, or FenArch for short, continues to grow in its role as the leading archaeological group in the northern part of the Fens. Meeting on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Mendis restaurant in Old Market, it is now into its series of winter speakers.

At its next meeting on 22 November, Andy Ketley will be giving an illustrated talk on the tunnels that run under Wisbech. His research has been carried out as part of the High Street Project and he has been researching the subject for over a year. The size and extent of the tunnels will come as a surprise to most and the meeting is open to non members for a small charge of £2.

Crowded Room Wisbech - A Celebration of the Community

Crowded Room Wisbech - A Celebration of the Community

Sun, 26 Nov 2017 13:00

Exhibition Opening 1pm - 4pm

Celebrating Our Community

The 'Crowded Room' project is a truly collaborative process which uses contemporary art practice to celebrate the importance of the individual and their place in the community. Tim Mann, the artist, uses different aspects of the human form to record an individual's presence within a large-scale portrait. The resulting work of art demonstrates that whilst each participant is different, in terms of appearance and character, as humans we are all integral to the world and are fundamentally all the same.

Tim also created additional works of art during a 'Crowded Room', using participant's hands, markers or counters to complement the main portrait.

Tim took the 'Crowded Room' project into different areas of Wisbech to celebrate each individual and their place within a community. He recognises that, whilst everyone has somewhere that they call home, sometimes circumstances dictate that they have to move and become part of an alternative community, whether on a temporary or permanent basis.

Tim wants to encourage and enable those who live, work or study in Wisbech, as well as visitors to the town, to participate in the project, celebrate their own importance and acknowledge their place within a community.
