Miss Fitt is an ALIEN!
That's what the Y1 Infant class says but the teachers think she is an amazing, highly skilled professional and the rest of the kids think she is cool. They need evidence! A whole week of mad Dramatic fun with plenty of action for the youngest cast members and crazy characters for the rest

Day 1
10:00am: Drama games and make new friends, learn a dance routine, find out about the play and create their characters. Auditions of key parts. Script read through. A very busy and exciting day. The auditions are not daunting as they merely act out a scene in groups and have fun. Scripts are given out to be taken home and learn lines ready for day 2. They can start planning their costumes. Finish at 4:00pm
Day 2
10:00am: Photoshoot. Work on new scenes which they create. Practice the dance routine learned yesterday. Learn songs. Block scenes Finish at 4:00pm
Day 3
10:00am: Block all the scenes, learn songs and dance pieces. Decide how they will look in costume. Rehearse and finish learning lines. It is important they know their lines as soon as possible so they aren't holding their scripts in rehearsal. Finish at 4:00pm
Day 4
10:00am: Rehearse and polish the performance, tech and dress run. They will need their costumes and props in the afternoon to rehearse in. Finish at 4:00pm

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 14:00

Back by popular demand in conjunction with the Wisbech Classic Car Rally (which will be displayed in Somers Road car park).

Interested in Motor Sport from the 1930's onwards?

Octavia Hill Museum presents …

An afternoon of Motor Sport with Author and Photographer Anthony Carter. Sunday 13th August 2017 2pm

Come and view a fantastic exhibition of photographs taken behind the scenes, capturing legendary racing drivers and mechanics preparing for races all over Europe! At a time when you could enter the pits and paddock, getting up close and personal to the action.

Anthony Carter, our very own Wisbech Author and Photographer gives a talk about the days of oily overalls and minimal safety on the track, before showcasing some of his finest prints for all to see in a vast exhibition covering an abundant number of race tracks from Silverstone to Nürburgring in Germany.

You won't want to miss this one opportunity to speak to a man who really knows his stuff about the golden years of motor racing.

Featuring some of the most recognisable of drivers; Chris Amon, Jim Clarke, John Surtees, Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss to name a few!

Anthony Carter has two books out in book shops, which will also be available at the museum. Orders can be taken for 'Reflections' which is currently in its third reprint. There is a good supply of 'Pursuit of Victory'. If you have a copy feel free to bring it along to be signed and meet the man in person!

The talk starts at 2pm on Sunday 13th of August and the exhibition will run until later on in the week.

THE PORTRAIT AND ITS USES Wisbech and Fenland Museum Exhibition

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 10:00

THE PORTRAIT AND ITS USES

Wisbech and Fenland Museum Exhibition

19th August – 21st October 2017

From the portrait of an emperor on a Roman coin to the proliferation of the 'selfie'. This engaging exhibition, calling upon many artefacts held in the enchanting rooms of Wisbech and Fenland Museum, is not to be missed.

Aldo Ierubino, curator of the Portrait and its uses exhibition, an art historian and avid supporter of Wisbech and Fenland museum, as well as an experienced lecturer at the Open University, describes the exhibition activity 'Drawing upon the collections of the Museum, the exhibition engages with the historical ubiquity of the portrait and the ways in which its subject has been used to serve social, political and cultural functions. Ranging across such artefacts as the profile portrait of an emperor on a Roman coin to the proliferation of the 'selfie' by way of the emergence of artistic and craft practices serving the needs of patrons to the development of formal portrait painting and the impact of photography and digital technology, the exhibition engages with and explores the fascination for the portrait as a form and the subjects of those portraits.

Along with the engagement with artefacts such as coins, medals, plaques, sculpture, death masks, porcelain, paintings, miniatures, prints calling cards and cartoons, photographs and digitally produced media, the purpose of the exhibition is to define and evaluate the enduring role of the portrait in culture. For example, whilst we take for granted the use of the monarch's portrait on contemporary coins and bank notes, we never question its historical symbolism - the exhibition addresses the nature of this symbolism and its historical ancestry. Tracing this historical lineage through examples of British coins and medals, the fine full-length portrait of Napoleon I in His Coronation Robes, and artefacts associated with the cult of the Emperor Napoleon, as well as the Museum's unique collection of early photographs of the Madagascan royal family taken by the missionary Rev William Ellis, and examples of coins and medals from the ancient world, the nature of symbolism and its political use is explored.

In a similar manner, the desire to record the appearance of another person or of ourselves is tested in relation to concepts of realism, verisimilitude, recording, characterisation, and status. At one level, the exhibition addresses the universal narrative of portraiture and at another level it considers the actuality of what is represented and the issue of creative ownership. One section of the exhibition considers the example of a unique collection of 19th century prison photographs of criminals incarcerated in Wisbech Goal which record the social reality of crime and criminality as well as the changing attitudes towards the recording of crime and punishment.

The link between the form of the portrait and the subject is explored through the examples of fictional portraits from the illusionistic and somewhat bizarre assemblages of fruits, plants, flowers and other natural forms, employed by the 16th Century artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, to create plausible portrayals of human heads, with their complex triple illusionism – a two-dimensional surface upon which is depicted visually accurate natural forms that coalesce in the viewer's eye to generate the appearance of a human head in three dimensions - to the creation of portraits of fictional characters such Miss Havisham of Satis House in the Museum's autograph manuscript of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.

The power of the portrait to draw our attention to the relationship between ourselves and the subject depicted is an important aspect of its enduring allure and perhaps helps to explain the contemporary fascination for the 'selfie'. This apparently novel form of the portrait unconsciously calls upon the tradition established by European artists such as Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt van Rijn's series of self-portraits painted in the 1660s. Each time we look at a portrait we see ourselves through the vision of the artist or the lens of the photographer's camera or mobile phone. Digital technology and the Internet has empowered us all to create as well as manipulate both the portrait and the self-portrait and ultimately to have control over image-making which lies at the core of the significance of the portrait. This democratisation of image-making albeit reliant upon modern technology and the gatekeeping function of the companies that own the Internet platforms, has led to proliferation of the portrait in the light of its near artistic demise, and ensured that as a form it continues to engage our creative attention through its reworking of traditional themes.

Alongside the exhibition, a series of supporting activities will extend and complement the visitor's engagement with the concept of the portrait and its meaning. A series of talks, held in the Museum, and guided visits to see works in situ, will expand and focus some of the themes presented in the exhibition. Visitors to the museum will also have the opportunity to see a portrait being created by a local artist, as well as have their own digital portrait taken by a local photographer.

Celebrating the exhibition's focus on the portrait, Tim Mann, a local artist/photographer will create, through a community art project, a large-scale, portrait of Wisbech. The project will give all local residents an opportunity through a series of workshops to be held in the Museum and at the Rosmini Centre, to become part of the finished work portraying Wisbech. The completed work will be displayed in a number of temporary locations in Wisbech and will be donated to the people of Wisbech.'

The exhibition is free, tours and lectures are £3 per person, in support of the museum.

SportsAid at The Light Cinema with Nut Job 2

Sun, 20 Aug 2017

Staff at the March and Wisbech branches of the Nottingham Building Society (The Nottingham) and Harrison Murray are rolling out the red carpet for the charity SportsAid.

The branches have teamed up with The Light Cinema in Wisbech to host a fundraising showing of the film 'Nut Job 2'. The event is hoped to raise around £300 to help local swimming star Anya Falkus.

The team have sponsored Anya through charity SportsAid for almost three years, raising funds to assist with the costs of her travel and training for competitions.

The 15-year-old from Wisbech has been swimming since the age of four and after losing her sight at the age of eight, joined the East of England para-squad. A regular on the regional and national podiums, Anya dreams of competing at the Paralympics.

Building society branch manager Alan Cope said: "We are thrilled to be involved with this initiative to help someone that is part of our local community.

"The main barriers to progression of professional athletes is often the high costs of travel and training so particularly value the support of our local community. Events like this are essential for raising funds to help Anya on her journey."

Tickets for 'Nut Job 2' cost £5 and can be bought from the Wisbech and March branches of Nottingham Building Society. As well as the film, there will be face painters, a cake sale and a visit from Robin Hood.

Angles Music in the Bar

Thursday Whatever!

24th August

TOADFISH BONE

From the Muddy Waters of the Nene to the plantations on the Delta, down through Texas, up to Chicago, then across to London, Canvey Island, and back home - with a few meanderings from the path along the way. Toadfish Bone presents an evening of Blues, rock and r'n'b stipped down to the raw basics and with more than a little improvisation within the frame of the music. Featuring - Jimmy Watson - vocals; Gary Compton - guitar; Ben Rickett - Bass and Dave Jackson - Drums. Bring your friends down to the theatre for an evening of toe tapping and occasional head nodding!

All events on Thursdays

All gigs start at 8:00pm

£4 on the door

Many of the musicians enjoy themselves and the audience's reactions that they return, time and time again.

The standard is high and definitely worth a visit for a great music experience.

Leverington Church Indoor Market

Sat, 02 Sep 2017 10:00

Don't forget next Saturday 2nd September is your next opportunity to come along to get involved in something quite special... Leverington's very own indoor market 10am - 12noon.

Okay so you're walking past the church and it starts raining - fantastic, really? YES! As far as I'm aware the roof is currently leak free so come in, shelter and enjoy a cake, coffee & chat.

Or it's so very warm, you need to cool down, come & visit our indoor Mart and enjoy the fine historic church. With it's long history & evidence that a stone church had been built on the site around 1150. Plus one of the finest C15th carved fonts in the country & the renowned C15th Jesse stained glass window.

Have a mooch around our stalls selling all sorts of exciting 'stuff'; hand made goods, produce, yummy jams, scrummy preserves all served with a smile and if you're lucky a wink!

Want more? Then we have a book stall selling pre loved books from children's to adults and sometimes the odd colouring book.
