Recycling fun for families at eco day

Recycling fun for families at eco day

Recycling fun for families at eco day

Reduce, reuse and recycle will be the order of the day when an Eco Family Fun Day is held at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech on Tuesday, May 30, from 10am to 2pm.

A treasure bug hunt, worm hotel building and a repair café will be just some of the fun activities on offer at the free, half-term event designed to help families with their recycling and reuse.
The day is the first in a range of events being held across the county over the next year by Fenland District Council's and Cambridgeshire County Council's waste management partner Amey.

Lisa Constanti-Duggan, Amey's waste education manager, said: "The aim of the day is to showcase different initiatives across the county where recycling, reuse and reduction are happening right now, as well as provide people with inspiration for how to make the most of (and reduce) their own waste. "Through a range of activities and information sharing, we hope that the event motivates people to make a difference and create a sustainable Cambridgeshire."

The fun day will help families to be confident with their recycling using a range of craft and educational activities.

Youngsters can become 'Superworm Champion Composters' by building their own worm hotels, make their own compost stew and bug hunting kits, and take part in a bug treasure hunt.
Following a new national trend, experts will also be on-hand to help repair broken electronics, bikes and households items that residents can bring into a Repair Café.

There will also be lots of recycling activities, arts and crafts and a reading corner, as well as the chance to win some eco goodies in a competition.

To find out more about the day or to book a space on one of the activity sessions, contact the Amey education team on 01223 815490 or email: wasteeducation@amey.co.uk

Annual Assembly

Mon, 12 Jun 2017 19:30

ANNUAL TOWN ASSEMBLY

Purpose of the Annual Assembly - All Parish and Town Councils throughout England are required by law to hold an annual parish meeting each year. The purpose of calling this meeting is to enable the Council to report on the year. Also, electors are given a chance to have their say on anything which they consider is important to the people of the parish of Wisbech.

Who can attend the meeting? - The meeting is open to the public but such persons only as are registered as local government electors for the town will be entitled to vote at the meeting.

Will I be able to ask questions and make suggestions? - Yes, any registered elector may ask questions of the Council. These will usually be answered by the Mayor, or designated to be answered by the Town Clerk, or a Councillor. There is also the opportunity for members of the public to bring to council?s attention matters relating to the town or its electors.

Who will chair the meeting? - As Chairman of Wisbech Town Council, The Mayor will chair the meeting.

Will Town Councillors be present? - Yes, all Town Councillors are summoned to attend the meeting.

Will notes be taken of the meeting? - Yes, minutes of the meeting are kept as a written record. Minutes of the previous meeting are presented to those attending for their consideration and agreement.

How long will the meeting last? - As long as need be within reason. This is dependent on the number of questions raised and any following discussion. Generally, the meeting will last no longer than two hours.

Will the Press be there? - The Press is notified of the meeting and invited to be present. This is the case for all Town Council meetings.

Pop-up Death Cafe at Loafers Cafe

Thu, 15 Jun 2017 18:45

On Thursday 15th June there will be a Pop-up Death Cafe at Loafers Cafe in Market Place, Wisbech. 6.45pm - 9pm.Free of Charge, but arrive early to buy any food or drink before the introduction at 7pm. The door will close at 7.05pm, so that potentially sensitive discussion is not interrupted.

At a Death Cafe people drink tea, eat cake and discuss death. Our aim is to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session. Thus, it is not for those struggling to adjust to bereavement, nor for the terminally ill. It is not a counselling session.

Getting Support and Funding

Getting Support and Funding

Getting Support and Funding

29th June 2017

10.30am to 3pm

Funding is an ever-present challenge for groups and organisations working in the voluntary sector. Where to find the right type and level of funding is the most frequently asked question among community groups across Cambridgeshire.

This event provides the perfect opportunity for organisations to meet key funders, and allows for discussion around your particular organisations needs and requirements. Attendance is by appointment only.

Funders at the event are: The Heritage Lottery Fund; The Heathy Fenland Fund, The Evelyn Trust: and Tesco Bags of Help. There will also be demonstrations of how to undertake a funding search using the new 'Support Cambridgeshire 4 Communities' resource.

The Evelyn Trust is interested in healthcare projects in communities in Cambridgeshire through our rolling small grants programme under which applications in the range £4,000 to £10,000 can be considered at any time. Whilst welcoming other applications we would particularly encourage applications that are in line with the Cambridgeshire Health and Wellbeing Strategy, especially projects which:
Support young people within families with mental health, alcohol, violence or substance abuse issues
Assist working age adults with long term conditions and healthcare communities that support these issues
Enable older people to receive help and support in the community rather than needing to go into hospital or long term care.

Bags of Help is Tesco's exciting local community grant scheme where the moneyraised from the 5p bag charge is being used to fund thousands of local projects incommunities right across the UK. Projects that bring benefit to their community will get the green light – these range from improving community buildings and outdoor spaces to buying new equipment, training coaches or volunteers and hosting community events. Tesco customers vote on three projects in each area every other month. The winner of the vote receives up to £4,000 and the runners up also get up to £2,000 and £1,000 each.

The Heritage Lottery Fund funds a broad range of activities that help people of all ages explore their heritage together. These can range from small scale events, exhibitions & workshops to larger projects that include training, volunteering, conservation & restoration. HLF have a range of programmes with grants from £3,000 to £5 million.

Healthy Fenland Fund funds charitable projects from existing and newly forminggroups that are/will be constituted, and based in Fenland. Groups must be local asthe aim is to build local capacity (as the name of the Programme "Engaging andStrengthening Communities in Fenland" suggests). Charitable projects will be supported if they seek to improve the health and well being of people living in Fenland.

Support Cambridgeshire 4 Communities. An opportunity to find out how to carry out funding searches on this new free funding resource on the Support Cambridgeshire website.CCVS development staff will be able to help groups with their funding planning, andpreparations applications and information on other grant making trusts and fundingsources.

Booking is essential to attend this event and all sessions with funders are by appointment only

To book your appointments call us on 01223 464696 or email:enquiries@cambridgecvs.org.uk

We need to know which funders you want to talk to and a bit about the projects you want to fund.

Each appointment will be for 15 minutes and refreshments will be available

Wisbech Rose Fair - float parade

The search has begun to find this year's Rose Queen to head up the popular Rose Fair carnival parades.

Now into its 54th year the event attracts visitors from across the country.

The competition has officially opened and anybody over the age of 14 who lives in the Wisbech district can enter.

• To be in with a chance of winning send a picture of yourself and why you think you deserve to be Rose Queen, along with your address and contact details to sarah.cliss@archant.co.uk before 5pm on Thursday June 15. The lucky winner will be contacted by Wisbech Round Table.

• The contest is being run by the Wisbech Standard along with the Wisbech Round Table, which organises the Rose Fair parade.

The Rose Queen will be taken for a dress fitting, have her hair styled, her nails painted and enjoy a photography session. They will also win a cash prize.

In keeping with tradition there will be two Rose Fair parades on Saturday July 1 – one at 11am and one 2pm – which bring a carnival atmosphere to the town and attracts visitors from across the region to enjoy the spectacle.

The Rose Fair is regarded as one of the region's finest flower festivals and this year has the theme "For the Love of Books."

This year's festival runs from June 28 to July 1 and centres around St Peter & St Paul's Church.

Three other town centre churches will also hold festivals, each carrying their own theme.

During Rose Fair the whole town takes on a festive atmosphere, celebrating its horticultural heritage. The jewel in the crown is the church of St Peter and St Paul which celebrated it's 900th anniversary in 2011.
