4th Labyrinth

4th Labyrinth

Sun, 26 Feb 2017 15:30

A rocking treat for the ears and the eyes from four professional Cambridge musicians who you may have seen at Cambridge Rock Festival.

You'll find the 4th Labyrinth sound somewhere between Queen, ELO, The Beatles,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple, Radiohead and The Foo Fighters. It's a sound that goes back to basics, that rock with just a sprinkle of pop, a bit like it used to be in the 70's - but with a modern approach.

Refreshing and more than a little special.

Marcel Kunkel (vox/keys)
John Harper (guitar/vox)
Claudia McKenzie (bass/vox)
Tom Winch (drums)

Doors 3.30pm - Band 4.15pm
Families are welcome with free admission for accompanied under 14s.

Active EU Citizens workshop – Wisbech

Active EU Citizens workshop – Wisbech

Fri, 17 Mar 2017 09:30

A workshop to look at the benefits of being an active EU citizen in Wisbech and understanding our rights

Are you a European citizen living in the Wisbech area? Would you like to be involved in local activities to meet more people, and to improve life here in the UK?

If your passport shows that you are from an EU member state (not including the UK), you can register for a place at our 'active citizens' workshop. Where the registration form says 'Company' please put 'Wisbech EU' - and also put which EU country is on your passport.

At the workshop, we will be discussing what it means to be an 'active citizen', and there will be special guests coming in to talk about the activities that they are involved in. We will also discuss topics such as:
•Voting in elections
• Volunteering
• Ways to be more involved in our neighbourhoods & communities

After the workshop, if you would like some practical experience of working to improve your neighbourhood or community, we will try to find you a mentor. This would be someone who, just like you, has come to the UK as a citizen of another EU country and is now playing an active part in life here in the UK.

There is no charge to attend the workshop. You will receive a certificate of attendance from the East of England Local Government Association, and a small thank you gift.

To register for a place, please use the 'Register online' button below. Or if you would like us to do it for you, please contact: Sue Hay, Active Citizens Together Project Worker (m) 07920-257-964 (e) sue.hay@eelga.gov.uk

This workshop is brought to you by the Active Citizens Together project with funding from the EU Commission's Justice Directorate.

Elme Hall Rock & Blues - Nick Corney and the Buzz Rats

Elme Hall Rock & Blues - Nick Corney and the Buzz Rats

Sun, 19 Mar 2017 15:00

Some ten years ago, Nick Corney walked into a music shop on a whim, and bought an acoustic guitar. He has scarcely put it down since, turning out songs that span the emotional spectrum, and producing a five track EP - Signs Of Life. Nick's voice effortlessly evokes the claustrophobia of small-town living on Sweet Mary, and the bittersweet memories of a lost friend on Smoky Joe.

2015 saw Nick return to the studio to record another four-track EP, this time joined by Christopher R. Moore on lead guitar and harmonica, Ben Knight on keys and Keith Doe on drums. The Buzz Rats, as they are collectively known, have expanded Nick's sound beyond the realm of the acoustic singer-songwriter. Ben's delicate piano lines can be heard on fan favourite and title track 'The Perfect Landing', transforming a sparse acoustic song into an mournful sonic lullaby. Christopher's blues roots are clearly on display in A Thousand Lives - his slide-guitar lines adding a haunting atmosphere to the gritty folk-inspired number.

The Buzz Rats have become regular featured artists at respected local music venues who are keen to promote the best of local original music. Following on from Nick's solo appearance on BBC Radio Cambs with Sue Dougan, tracks from the new EP have been played by Jeremy Sallis on the afternoon show, Mark Forrest on The Evening Show and by Tom Simkins on BBC Introducing.

The very best in original blues-roots.
On tour from Australia and known for his energetic live performances and unique guitar mastery.

Geoff Achison invokes the spirit of the great blues & soul artists to create an engaging original sound.

From the deep south of Australia, his unique blend of "Bluesic" has created scores of devoted fans around the world. He's been chosen as one of the "Top Ten Hottest New Guitarists" by Guitar Player Magazine and was included in the "Top 100+ Guitarists You Should Know" roster.

In 2012 Geoff was listed as one of the "Top 50 Australian Guitarists " He's been a 17-time Guest Guitar Instructor at Jorma Kaukonen's (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane) Fur Peace Guitar Ranch and an exciting festival favorite featured on PBS, NPR, CNN and the BBC.

He is a versatile artist who can deliver a complete show with nothing more than his soulful voice and virtuosic acoustic guitar style but is also a highly regarded electric guitarist compared favourably to Jeff Beck and Warren Haynes providing the full experience with his outstanding blues-rock combo, The Souldiggers.

Geoff is also a keen and expert improviser and has been invited on stage to jam with big names such as The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, George Porter, Jr., The Wood Brothers, John Mayall, Randall Bramblett, Delbert McClinton and many others. In 2014 Geoff Achison & The Souldiggers celebrated 20 years of music making with a spectacular live album and DVD package whilst the latest album, 'Another Mile, Another Minute'. He frequently tours the USA and Europe and maintains a steady presence on the home front in Australia.

He is supported by his "UK Souldiggers" -
Internationally acclaimed drummer, SAM KELLY (Cymande, Roger Chapman, Gary Moore, Chaka Khan, Madeline Bell)
Keys man, PAUL JOBSON (Boney M, Hamish Stewart, Linda Lewis, Bad Manners, Noel McCalla and the Anti Nowhere League)
Bassman, ANDY HODGE ("We Will Rock You", Raw Glory, Bootleg Blondie).

On a personal note: A few years ago Barry Homan introduced us to the music of Geoff Achison and "persuaded" us to go with him and see him live. We all shared what I still regard as a guitar playing masterclass from Geoff, and with The Souldiggers an amazing evening's music experience...MM

Take a listen online and then come and hear the real deal live.

Wisbech Society Meeting - Red Arrows pilot Squadron Leader Mike Ling, Red 10

Wisbech Society Meeting - Red Arrows pilot Squadron Leader Mike Ling, Red 10

Mon, 27 Mar 2017 19:30

Wisbech Society announces a special presentation by Red Arrows pilot Squadron Leader Mike Ling, Red 10, at Wisbech Grammar School on 27 March

Squadron Leader Mike Ling, Team Supervisor and display commentator of the world famous Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team The Red Arrows, will be presenting an illustrated talk in Wisbech Grammar School's Russell Hall from 7.30pm on Monday, 27 March 2017.

Entering his ninth and final season with the Reds in 2017, 'Lingy' joined the team in 2007 as its youngest ever pilot. He will leave at the end of 2017 as the longest-serving Red Arrows pilot yet.

Mike flew as a display pilot from 2008, leaving after the standard three-year tour of duty the majority of Red Arrows pilots serve. But he was called back almost immediately as Red 10 and has remained so since late 2011.

Lingy's time as both display pilot and Team Supervisor gives him a unique perspective. His primary duty is to ensure safety in every aspect of the display, and while the Reds fly their gruelling pre-season work-up, Mike flies in the back seat of a different formation jet at least once every day.

He also observes from the ground, critiquing the display while ensuring safety, as well as writing and delivering the commentary that accompanies the team's performances at airshows in the UK and abroad.

Lingy is one of only two Reds cleared to fly photographers and visitors in the back of his jet and many spectacular photographs and videos of the Red Arrows in action were shot from Mike Ling's Hawk. And on the unusual occasion that a visitor – usually military aircrew or, very rarely, a celebrity – is invited to fly
with the team, they usually ride with Lingy.

His presentation promises to be informative and exciting, revealing much about the team and its display, as well as the wider Royal Air Force.

Admission is free for Society members. Non-members are invited to attend the lecture at an admission cost
of £3.00, while under-18s are invited to come along for free.
